mistress mabel

i love the fratellis.
really.
a lot.
they're - oh - that post punk revival thing? or something? kinda remind me of the kinks? and, sadly, they are apparently taking a break. whether temporary or permanent is anyone's guess. but it does make me sad.

anyway, today's song goes to the lady pushing her shopping cart out the door of the grocery store today while i was on my way in. she was, i dunno, maybe 70 or so years old and she had this crazy wild mess of white hair on her head. it was all curls and just sticking out every direction. the funny thing is that she was otherwise, flawless. perfect makeup, tastefully dressed.

i couldn't stop staring at her. she looked so relaxed and content. and that hair, my god, it was wild!

i got almost to the point of passing her on the sidewalk and she spoke to me. she said, "you must be freezing to death, wearing shorts today."

i smiled and looked at her, she was wearing a just below the knees skirt, stockings, and, of course, sensible but stylish shoes.

i said, "well, then you must be too, you are wearing a skirt. but actually, i think it's quite nice out today, i'm not cold at all."

she smiled back and it just dazzled me. she had that old-money classiness and yet had a wildness about her. "well, everyone is entitled to her own opinion. i am cold, i think it's freezing outside. you have a lovely day dear and stay warm."

(it really was around 55-60ยบ outside today, not that cold.)

when i got home i logged into pandora and the first song that played was "mistress mabel". i immediately thought of the lady at the store...i wonder what her name was, she looked like she could be a mabel.
